I’m a freelance designer with more than 24 years experience in marketing strategy, print and web design, and project management. I’ve worked with well-known brands including WR Case & Sons Cutlery, Bush Beans, John Deere, Coca-Cola, Lowe’s, PetSafe, and the American Red Cross, and while I don’t think winning awards is everything, I’m thankful to have won many local (KAF) and District 7 Addys, as well as two National Addys over the years. My true passion lies in working with small and mid-sized businesses—mostly in the construction, transportation, healthcare, and financial industries—with a special focus on B2B communications.
Strategy is better. It’s true, I’m a Photoshop/InDesign junkie. If it can be done in Adobe, I’m your girl. But to me that’s only part of the picture. My friends and coworkers probably get tired of me saying this, but here I go again: “graphic design is not about making pretty pictures”. “Pretty” is good, but knowledge of typography, composition and color theory only get you halfway around the bases. Communicating visually, using graphic design and layout as your toolset, is absolutely critical to the success of almost any corporation or product. Think of design as your “silent salesman”. If designed well, your print collateral and digital marketing efforts immediately convey the very thing which makes your company and products the best choice for your target audience. It’s my job to find out exactly what you do that makes you unique and special in your market or category, and then convey that message concisely through impactful visual design and compelling copy. “Strategy First, Photoshop Second”.
So is spending time with my family, friends, and pets. I also love kayaking, hiking, watching Foo Fighters videos, remodeling old houses, reading Michael Perry books, listening to NPR and occasionally bowling (quite badly).
Most of these were companies I worked for while employed at Bluegill Creative. Some names you might recognize, some you might not, but I've enjoyed getting to know all of them:
